But she’s done a ton of more traditional drama as well, including TV’s Karen Cisco and M. Gugino is something of a visual effects veteran, having worked on CG-heavy films such as director Zack Snyder’s Watchmen and Sucker Punch, Sin City and the Spy Kids series. So we definitely had things we could respond to.” “We had wind machines and rain machines and all sorts of stuff. “It was in front of a green screen but it was on a gimbal, many feet up in the air, that tipped and turned and spun,” said Gugino. But whenever possible, Peyton had his actors on physical sets, including a helicopter cockpit built on a contraption that could be rotated and rattled at will. to San Francisco to find their missing daughter, Blake (Alexandra Daddario).ĭirected by Newfoundland-born Brad Peyton (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island), San Andreas features some state-of-the-art digital effects, meaning Gugino and Johnson spent a lot of time working in front of green screens. When a catastrophic earthquake hits California, Ray and Emma are flung back together as they try to make their way from L.A. She plays Emma Gaines, the estranged wife of search and rescue helicopter pilot Ray Gaines (Johnson). In San Andreas, Gugino’s character doesn’t have the luxury of sleep. “Also, never to sleep in the buff,” she said. And that even after the shaking has stopped, there will likely be aftershocks, especially in the wake of a major quake. She knows that instead of running outside, it’s safer to take cover under a sturdy desk or table. Though she’s now a New Yorker, Gugino has become well-versed in earthquake response. But I was ready to run out of that house (naked) like the day I was born.” “I finally found a robe that was at the bottom of the bed and I went running outside. “I was sleeping naked and I could not find my clothes,” Gugino said with a laugh. Her first instinct was to flee from the house. I was dead asleep, and I feel like I started hearing things before I even felt it, like things were falling.” “I was living in Pacific Palisades with my boyfriend at the time. “It was the first earthquake I had ever experienced,” Gugino said during a recent visit to Toronto to talk about San Andreas, in theatres May 29. Gugino, who co-stars with Dwayne Johnson in the upcoming disaster thriller San Andreas, was living in Los Angeles in 1994 when the Northridge earthquake jolted the city, ultimately causing $20 billion in damage and killing 57 people. And one of the lessons she carries with her to this day is that you probably shouldn’t sleep naked in California. Researched & Written by Jodi Sapita on the FlexJobs Team Release Notesįixed a crash on some systems when choosing the "Migrate iPhoto Libraries" menu item Improved AppleScript support: New support for copying albums or photos between libraries, merging libraries, and exporting photos/albums from a library.Faster library loading: PowerPhotos 2.0 has rewritten a bunch of its internals to load your library much faster than PowerPhotos 1.0.New duplicate search engine: PowerPhotos 2.0 uses a new duplicate comparison algorithm that can find more duplicate photos which are not quite 100% identical, such as scaled down copies of photos, photos that have been resaved in a different format or with different compression, and even photos with minor edits applied to them.Multiple windows: You can now open each library in a separate window in PowerPhotos, allowing for easier comparison between libraries, and dragging and dropping photos/albums between libraries.Library groups: For those with lots of libraries, you can now organize your libraries into groups in the PowerPhotos sidebar.Global menu bar item: Get fast access to your libraries via a global item in your menu bar even when PowerPhotos itself isn’t running.◦ Set Finder creation/modification dates to the photo’s EXIF date ◦ Optionally include videos from Live Photos and all photos from a burst ◦ Include captions, dates, keywords, and titles in EXIF metadata ◦ Export unmodified photos, or as JPG, PNG, HEIF, or TIFF of different sizes ◦ Export as a flat folder or as a folder hierarchy in the Finder that mimics your album hierarchy PowerPhotos 2.0 has a new, more fully featured export function with options such as Advanced exporting: Photos has an export command, but it is fairly limited in what it can provide. In PowerPhotos 2.0, it can now see and work with any photos in your iCloud photo library, and will automatically download any photos from iCloud as needed. For users with the “Optimize Mac Storage” option enabled, this could mean a significant portion of your iCloud library would not be visible to PowerPhotos. Improved iCloud Photos support: If you use iCloud Photos, PowerPhotos 1.x was only able to see photos in your library that had already been downloaded to your local hard drive.PowerPhotos can analyze your libraries for duplicate photos, showing them to you side-by-side and letting you get rid of extra copies of photos that you no longer need Use a single library to hold a smaller collection that you sync with iCloud, while keeping the bulk of your photos in separate libraries so they don't take up space on iCloud. If you use iCloud Photo Library to sync photos with your other devices, splitting up your library can help save on iCloud storage costs. PowerPhotos also supports searching across all your libraries at once to help track down a particular photo. You can easily switch between libraries, or just browse the photos in your libraries directly from PowerPhotos, without having to open each library in Photos. PowerPhotos allows you to break up your Photos.app images among multiple Photos libraries, rather than having to store all of them in one giant library. And with it being three generations of people and all that, I thought it was pretty cool.' Noel nods his head in agreement. 'We were doing something for a specific reason. 'It wasn't like we were jerking off,' sighs Weller, exasperated. When their mutual hero, McCartney, came into the frame, it was as if Sixties elitism was taking over. In some people's eyes, Weller and Gallagher being friends was suspicious enough. It was then that the derogatory term 'Dad-rock' was coined, and it has stuck ever since. Indeed, the only time that the notoriously touchy Weller gets remotely stroppy is when I refer to the photograph of him, Noel and Paul McCartney, taken at the time they recorded 'Come Together' for the Bosnian War Child project. 'You just click with certain people, don't you?' says Weller gruffly, sticking his hands yet deeper into his jacket pockets. 'I was drunk.' Nor does the 41-year-old 'Modfather of the Rock Aristocracy' seem especially keen to analyse why it is that he and the 32-year-old 'Saviour of British Guitar Music' have turned out to be such good mates. 'You were helping yourself to our rider at Glastonbury, and I wasn't having any of it.' 'That's right, isn't it, Paul?' says Noel, pulling up a swivel chair and lounging on it. According to legend, the first thing that Noel Gallagher ever said to Paul Weller was: 'Piss off!' Weller (it's always 'Weller') is a suave vision in sheepskin, while Noel (it's always 'Noel') sits slouched forward in his chair, with his anorak zipped up almost to his nose.Īt times, watching them banter together, punting for punch lines, they seem less like a British rock-music dream team (trad division), and more like Brit-rock's George and Mildred, only with added swearing and drugs. We're in the mixing room of Huckenden Farm, near High Wickham, where Oasis (or rather, what's left of Oasis after the recent departure of guitarist Paul 'Bonehead' Arthur and bassist Paul 'Guigs' McGuigan) are set to rehearse for the foreseeable future. 'Some of us get better after the first time, Noel.' 'It's kind of like the first time you have sex, isn't it? Every time after that you've done it before, haven't you?' There comes a point when you've just got to go, "All this has got to change." I've seen it all before, man, you know what I mean?' He turns to Weller for moral support. 'You can't go to any more parties, you can't drink any more drinks, you can't do any more drugs. 'There comes a point when you just can't do it any more,' he says. Weller laughs and says to me: 'He's left me outside before, shouting through the letterbox. I'd be coming back off tour, and people would go: "Your house is lovely." And I'd be like (irate): "Who the fuck are you?" ' 'And I just said: "That's it, man, the bar's closed." The house in London was like a nightclub. 'It was about a year and a half ago, right?' he says, dragging on a Benson & Hedges. On a warm autumn afternoon, in a secluded rehearsal studio, Noel Gallagher, rock star and dad-to-be, is telling Paul Weller and The Observer about the exact point he decided that the party was over. and Liam's behaviour at the birth of his son Here, they talk frankly together for the first time about music, the daughter Paul Weller has never mentioned in print before, Noel Gallagher's fears about fatherhood. Both spokesmen for their respective generations, it's perhaps unsurprising that the men behind The Jam and Oasis became friends. A massive JRPG (the main story alone will take you close to 40+ hours to complete), Final Fantasy VIII is a divisive entry in the long line of Final Fantasy games. But in its defense, you get a whole lot of game for that kind of dough. Final Fantasy VIII is pushing the upper edges of premium mobile gaming at a whopping $21. If you want a good platformer, Symphony of the Night is a must for your Play library. I love seeing old classics ported to modern systems to let younger gamers (or those who never had the chance to experience them in the games' heydays) try them out. This version of Symphony of the Night is excellent and well worth the few dollars it costs. The team behind the port did a great job translating a very old game to a new platform and, while I had some gripes with them, the touchscreen controls let anyone hop in. The touchscreen controls are fine and certainly workable, but I found the game best played with a controller. However, Symphony of the Night is a classic game from the 90s and, along with Super Metroid, defined a whole genre dubbed "Metroidvanias," which we still see today.īesides just the charm and nostalgia, Symphony of the Night plays excellently on Android. You could have knocked me over with a feather when this game dropped on the Play Store out of the blue and with no fanfare. (Image credit: Source: Google Play Store) It works by promoting the levels of three different important neurotransmitters in the brain: serotonin, dopamine, and GABA. It is an “essential” amino acid, meaning it is important to the way our body functions but is not naturally made by the body. It can also help people who are going off of prescription anxiety medication to experience less side effects and withdrawal symptoms.Īnother game-changing nutrient is L-theanine. With more GABA, there is a natural reduction in anxiety due to a lessening of our fight or flight response. Many people feel optimistic about the supplement because it can help with feelings of anxiety without the excessive tiredness that many prescription medications can cause.* It has been extensively researched, and it is believed that the way it works is by being able to bind with GABA which helps it increase in the brain.* Kava kava is a great example of a non-prescription supplement with real potential. Now, onto the most important part! What, if any, over the counter anxiety remedies exist, and do they really work? Non-Prescription Options to Boost Mental Health It’s important to help reduce anxiety not only for those reasons, but also because it is just simply not a way that anyone should have to live. Over time, those symptoms can lead to larger problems like heart disease, weight gain, and even burn out. For people with anxiety, this response is frequently triggered even in situations that don’t warrant it.Īnxiety is particularly dangerous when it continues over a longer period of time.Īs the cortisol levels build up in the system, they tend to cause systemic problems like high blood pressure, trouble sleeping, rapid heart beat, and feelings of being overwhelmed. However, because the fight or flight response is an innate, involuntary system it often gets things wrong (we know logically that we have far more options than to just run away or get into a fight, especially if we’re facing a bear). This is simply part of our evolution and is what has kept our species alive up until this point. It can really affect your life if left unchecked.Ī lot of this is due to the fact that our bodies are always on the lookout for potential danger via our fight or flight response. The scale of anxiety doesn’t matter, in the long run, as the end result is essentially the same: constantly feeling afraid for no particular reason. Some people feel a low, constant feeling of anxiety while others will have full panic attacks. This can feel like a sense of dread, a feeling of panic, or even show physical symptoms like shaking, sweating, or heart palpitations. If we break it down to its bare bones, anxiety is both our mind and our body’s reaction to what we perceive as stressful, unfamiliar, or dangerous situations. We can’t really understand or judge whether over the counter anxiety medications work without first looking at exactly what anxiety is. To help you make your decision, we’ll take a deep dive into the world of over the counter anxiety medications. Plenty of people manage their anxiety with over the counter medication and supplementation, to a wide range of results.īut does it really work? Is it as effective as prescription medications? Most people just expect that they’ll have to take prescription meds at some point if they want to be effectively treated. Prescription medication is often considered a foregone conclusion when it comes to the treatment of anxiety. Working together to halt simultaneous enemy processions is where the game truly shines.Īs a single-player experience, things can get a bit too taxing, with some of the game’s concluding levels requiring players to concurrently fight orcs and lay down new defenses. Given that opponents often appear from multiple entrances, Orcs Must Die! 3 is much more fun as a cooperative experience. Witnessing the cartoonish carnage up-close is far more visceral when it’s occurring all around you. On the upside, the approach puts players right in the middle of the game’s eighteen stages, rather than merely managing defenses from a god’s eye point-of-view. You’ll have to settle for half-hearted whimsy like Egan’s single celebratory dance. Although the game occasional flirts with expositional opportunities, there’s rarely any follow-through. Another problem is how generic the characters feel. One example: some of the character abilities like Kelsey’s hoovering ability provide a very limited advantage. The duo uses bows, shotguns, an arsenal of unlockable weapons, secondary firing modes, and skills against adversaries, but the combat isn’t all that inspired. Either individually or with an optional online partner, you’ll clean up all the orcs who managed to sidestep or survive your procession of traps. The other part of Orcs equation is found in Kelsey and Egan, the game’s pair of playable protagonists. Smartly, the game’s vibrant colors and fairy tale-style settings and characters prohibit things from ever becoming too bloodthirsty. Placing traps and watching the hapless orc procession suffer through a series of merciless mechanisms and ambushes is where much of the game’s enjoyment lurks. And honestly, who doesn’t enjoy a bit of digital sadism? While the title might infer that extermination is the goal, sadistically torturing the orcs is the best approach to maximize scoring and the resources used to build additional traps. The first revolves around setting up an assortment of traps and ensnarements.įrom jutting spikes, spring-loaded traps that fling foes into lava, and spinning saw blades that emerge from the ground, Orcs Must Die! 3 offers a multitude of ways to skewer, lob, and slice the green-skins. You’re tasked with stopping them with two different techniques. The game releases waves of attackers hellbent on making their way to your rift. Much like Robot Entertainment’s inaugural series entry, Orcs Must Die! 3’s amalgam of tower defense gameplay with third-person action is persistently engaging. From a sporadically unintuitive user interface, a distinct lack of data for traps and weapons, and balancing issues with solo games, the title feels far more like a launch title than one that’s been in the hands of players for the last 53 weeks.īut that’s not to say the game lacks enjoyment. But disappointingly, Orcs Must Die! 3 still has several obvious blemishes. Often, there’s a silver lining associated with platform exclusivity, with developers able to react to player feedback. While some might have resented the title being restricted to the cloud-based streaming service, the deal undoubtedly helped the Texas-based studio recover after the financial losses incurred by free-to-play titles Orcs Must Die! Unchained, Hero Academy, and Hero Academy 2. Price: $29.99 via Steam and other digital marketplacesįollowing a year of exclusivity on the Google Stadia, Robot Entertainment’s Orcs Must Die! 3 has arrived on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows machines. But, this is where Paddle Nepal makes the magic happen! From the beginning, we had splashing wars, hopped between rafts and took turns on the kayaks. Expect the odd Class III rapid, intermixed with lots of floating. The Seti River is much tamer than the last rafting trip we did in Canada. In addition, we had three support kayaks with us and a photographer. For the first time we saw what would be a familiar sight on the river: locals loading up tractors of rocks from the river, to be used for building.Īfter getting outfitted with gear and our briefing from our lead guide, Rabi, our three rafts (one per family) took to the river. We tried to help out, but they were quicker without us, so the kids skipped rocks and we got our gear organized. As soon as you arrive, the staff get right to work blowing up the rafts and getting all the gear ready. Roads in Nepal are notoriously terrible and you will be pretty excited by the time you arrive. The water is warmer and cleaner than other rivers in Nepal and in your two days on the river, you get to see a range of Nepal’s scenic areas from quiet villages to wilderness jungle.ĭay 1 starts early with a departure from Pokhara at 7 am and a 1.5 drive to the Seti River. The Lower Seti Rivers offers Class II and III rapids, making it perfect for families or those wanting a relaxing rafting experience. The staff were incredibly enthusiastic interacting with our kids and making the experience fun with splashing fights, cliff jumping, boat hopping and more. Secondly, they understand families and have tailored this trip to meet the needs of families. Owned by a Nepali-Canadian family, you can expect the best in safety, professionalism and overall experience. They are Nepal’s leading whitewater company with years of international experience and leadership within the industry. While they are similarly priced, it is definitely worth the $15 extra/person to go with Paddle Nepal. All travel agencies in Thamel ( Kathmandu) and Pokhara sell them or you can buy directly from the company. There are quite a few companies offering similar rafting trips in Nepal. 11.0.1 Enjoyed Reading this Post? We were with friends, new and old and an amazingly enthusiastic group of staff, away from tourist -laden Kathmandu and the busy trekking trails.Īfter a fun-filled day on the water, we camped along the banks of the river, roasted marshmallows over a fire and slept like babies in our tents. This is our honest review of our trip with three families in April 2019, with kids ranging from 7-16 years old.Īs the kids hopped between rafts and caught rides on the kayaks, I looked up at the simple homes along the banks of the river and the suspension bridges overhead and sighed with pleasure. We partnered with Paddle Nepal, a fantastic company to showcase why rafting in Nepal should be on your family Nepal itinerary. This is the perfect river for kids as it offers enough white water to make it exciting, but isn’t too intense. One of the highlights of our time in Nepal was the family 2 day/1 night rafting trip we did on the Lower Seti River with Paddle Nepal. But we knew the kids wanted to do more than just trek and luckily Nepal is an adventure playground with many fun family activities and cultural opportunities. Most people come to Nepal to trek and we were no exception.
